N2Worship Spring Training 2010
What is it?
It is a semester long emphasis on growing in worship. We want to be life-long worshipers. The last two summers we have had two-week camps which have been wonderful experiences, seeing so many learn or improve their musical skills. But, we are so aware how the time is not accessible for many people and how two weeks is barely scratching the surface. We want more.
Why are we doing this?
Worship is a core value of Hope Chapel. We love to worship, we were made for it, whether music or other arts or through our everyday lives. Our pastor, Geno, is calling us to allocate more times of corporate worship and prayer in our lives. There are other opportunities to join in, such as the Austin House of Prayer. We think we need to develop more musicians and vocalists to help lead these times of worship.
In order to accomplish this, we have these goals:
- Strengthen individual skills in worship
- Grow as worship team members
- Intentionally pursue creative avenues in worship, through new songs, dance, and other art forms.
- See more times of worship and prayer occur and be available to the community at large.
Mostly, we see this as action rather than knowledge transfer. We need to actively bring glory and adoration to our God rather than just knowing about it.
Who should attend?
We are anticipating people in 3 basic categories
- People who are currently playing their instrument and want more opportunity to develop / use their skills
- People who have played in the past and want to regain their instrument
- Beginners, or little experience.
The primary instruments we will focus on are keyboard/piano, guitar, bass, and drums/percussion, vocals. These instruments are best equipped for helping lead worship. If you play an instrument which is not a primary, we are less equipped to work with you and you will be more responsible, personally, to improve and be integrated into teams.
If you have questions about this, email or call us and let's talk.
What will we do?
Our common focal point will be worship music. We will work on playing / singing each song, becoming comfortable with individual play before integration. Then, we will often come together in a band setting (we plan to have multiple bands) and put the parts together. We think both the individual group work and the band setting should become jam sessions where learning / doing transforms into an amazing time.
Through all of this, there is an element of music knowledge that we will share to enable us all to have a common vocabulary and understanding in order to improve our ability to play by ear / within an improvisational setting. This is kind of a lofty goal, but over time, it can be developed.
We will have an emphasis on vocal training to help us improve our voices, including breathing and singing properly.
We also will have guest speakers who can speak to particular aspects of worship / music and will offer us good insight and inspiration into what and how we worship.
Apprenticeship is something we don't see as much in our time. It is learning through experiences, working alongside of someone who is accomplished in a particular craft or skill. We are confident that all of us can learn from each other. Those who have played for some time should be teaching or helping teach others. Actually, we often learn the most when we teach. Most of our worship team will be working with us in our sessions. We are excited to see how this causes us to grow .
At the end of the semester, most of us should have a list of 20 songs or so that we know well enough to play in a band setting. Those who are beginning will not have as many songs, but will be equipped to grow more quickly in our next sessions. We do plan on this being an ongoing process for us.
When will we meet?
Monday nights, from 7 - 9, Jan. 18th - April 26th. We will not meet the week of spring break.
How Much will it cost?
That is a hard one. We think this is a very worthwhile thing. Hope Chapel is always generous with our resources and we want everyone to participate who can. We have expenses with regards to resources we need. We want to pay our instructors something and we will also have expenses with respect to outside speakers / teachers. We are asking for $100 for the entire semester. We will offer some scholarships and ask for donations to help offset them. Please talk to us if you have any questions.
